Hey there! I’m Brett Verney – the guy behind WiFi Wizard of Oz. I’m a Network Engineer residing in Brisbane, Australia and currently consulting for Data#3 – one of Australia’s largest ICT solutions providers. I made the leap to enterprise IT in my hometown of Perth in 2008 after spending a few years providing IT services for home and small business. I’ve been fortunate to transition from an everyday run of the mill Route/Switch Network Engineer to a consultant specialising in WiFi and Identity Management which has become my passion.
My skill set doesn’t end there though… I have gotten my hands dirty on infrastructure from a wide range of vendors over the years. Basically, if it pushes 1s and 0s, I’ll happily work with it. I have a very inquisitive nature – I just have to know how my solutions fit into the bigger picture.
Why does this site exist?
I started WiFi Wizard of Oz primarily to offload and organise the endless pile of Knowledge Base that exists inside of my head. Have you ever heard the saying I’ve forgotten more than you’ve ever learnt? I occasionally have to deploy a technology that I haven’t touched for several years and while I may have mastered it back then, I just wish I had documented the process because I can’t remember a thing about it. I also find that the larger the audience, the more effort I put into explaining the topic in a way that everyone can understand. This forces me to make an effort to really know the ins and outs of the technology that I am writing about. So a win-win for both of us really!
I’m also at a stage in my life where I want to network and collaborate with others in the industry. The Enterprise WiFi community in particular has a surreal sense of comradery and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of the community. It’s time to give back…
